Harvesting "Information Excellence"

And We all thought we are experts in Data Science…. by informationexcellence

These are the days when it is lot more harder to evaluate a Data Scientist than it is to become a Data Scientist! Neither the evaluator nor the evaluatee knows what it means in majority of the time, and most of the discussion ends with the Jargon laced conversations.

At #COMPEGENCE, we use some simple methods. Like asking, “What is your favourite book on Data Science”. 80% of the interviews end there. For the remaining 20%, we have a follow up question, “What are the two things you learnt the most from that book”. And that takes out another 80 to 90% of the remaining 20%. And those who could not face the questions have an extremely valuable takeaway, assuming they paid attention to the spirit of the questions!

Here is a wonderful article by Kevin Gray, on that simplest of the statistical technique, Regression Analysis.

And in case you had no good answers for the simple method we use to evaluate, there are some very good pointers in the article.

http://www.datasciencecentral.com/profiles/blogs/what-is-regression-analysis

Quote from the article:

“….. My father worked in Pharmacology and Toxicology, and ANOVA and Probit Analysis were his stock-in-trade. I still have his copies of R.A. Fisher’s Statistical Methods for Research Workers and D. J. Finney’s Probit Analysis in my library…..

“Regression isn’t rocket science but it isn’t instant ramen either. Use it wisely and it will show you what lies beneath your cross tabs and dashboards. Use it carelessly and you may pay a hefty price.”

Speakerwise Summit Summary:

Summit Kick Off and Host Note by Prof M.H. Bala Subrahmanya, Chairman, DoMS, IISc

Balasubramnya

Prof M.H. Bala Subrahmanya, Chairman, Department of Management Studies, IISc kicked off the Summit with a brief overview of the IISc and the Department of Management Studies. It was an insight to know that the Department in IISc is the very first Management Institute in India. Driven by the long term vision of J N Tata on the need for credible Management Education and Research, the department was started in 1947, the year of India’s Independence, as the “Section of Economics and Social Sciences”. The Department evolution and chronology can be found found at http://mgmt.iisc.ernet.in/newwordpress/history/.

The department offers MBA and PhD Program in Management Studies. The “Quant to the Core” Business Today Article http://www.businesstoday.in/management/career/india-best-business-schools-2015-iisc-has-been-at-the-core-of-indias-management-training-programme/story/225495.html rightly describes the spirit and purpose of the Department Program, that has a selection ration of 1:200 among the qualified applicants!

The Department has over 50 Doctoral students pursuing cutting edge research in many areas including Analytics, R&D and Technology Management, Economics, Operations Research, Organizational Behaviour, Marketing, Strategy among others. The Department also offers PhD program by external registration, for working professionals, with certain criteria.

The chairman emphasized the need for the industry-academia collaboration; on the eve of the third joint conference in collaboration with the Information Excellence Group.

His welcome Note set the tone for the rest of the day with the focus and intent on how to leverage the technology and data towards effective business and societal decision making.

Inaugural Key Note, Pattern Analysis and Synthesis by Prof M.N. Murty, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Professor, Department of Computer Science and Automation, IISc.

prof.Murthy

Delivering the Inaugural session, Prof Murty spoke on the topic of “Pattern Analysis and Synthesis”. Starting off with the challenges and opportunities with the data explosion, Mr. Murty aptly demonstrated the same with an example google search on “Why google is a must and others die” (try it out!!). Prof Murty illustrated the usage and essentiality of “Pattern Analysis and Synthesis”, with the suggested solution approaches. He articulated the Representations of Objects as Vector in multi-dimensional space and String of Characters/primitives. When dataset is large and memory is small , he recommended the application of Incremental algorithm, Divide & Conquer Strategy and Compressing the data and the process.

Summarizing, he pointer the keen audience to the emerging trends in the following areas, perhaps hinting at the potential opportunity area for the IISc and Industry collaboration.

  • Representation is crucial and we do not have good theories.
  • Combination of content and structure: Information networks
  • Graph Databases
  • Probabilistic Graphical Models: Integration of results from Graph Theory
  • Approximate algorithms: Input and output are abstractions
  • When the prior is a power-law distribution, why use Dirichlet prior?
  • How to capture the domain knowledge? It may be useful in getting a good representation.

Industrial Internet and Digital Twin by Dr. Vinay Jammu, Technology Leader, Asset Performance Analytics and Systems

Dr.Vinay

Dr.Vinay articulated the shift from demographic customer segmentation to Psychographic customer engagement for marketing. He explained about Consumer Intent Analysis from Consumer internet -Digital information, which will lead to Industrial internet – Digital Transformation. He explained about Platform Personalization like Right service at a right time (Ex.OLA service).

He also explained that Industries have an ability to model real-time digital twin to optimize processes. Digital Twin Technology is about each asset having one 3D Model. For example each asset like Wind farm, Aviation, Locomotive having an individual model and it continuously changing by learning based on new dataset availability.

kaliprasadKaliprasadAndArjun

Kali Prasad and Arjun from Informatica presented on the “Role of Analytics in Proactive Customer Service and Rapid Product Adoption

The talk focused on how Informatica is optimizing its customer support operations by leveraging analytics and transitioning from reactive to proactive and preemptive customer service. The approach is focused on building customer interaction data hub and deriving business insights for business actions. The session provided some insights on how the “Data Integration Product Leader” is leveraging the Big Data technologies for the purpose for their in-house usage.

The speakers shared insights into some of the analytics initiatives at Informatica using machine learning and other solutions to make customers more successful in adopting their products and services. One of the interesting observation was around how big data analytics is complementing the business goal of rapid product adoption.

Derivatives Analytics Overview by Prashanth Kuttuva, Excecutive Director, E & Y

Prashanth

Prashant shared his insights in the area of Derivatives and the Analytics associated with it. He introduced the audience to financial derivatives and explained about derivatives risk measurement process flow. Prashanth highlighted that, irrespective of the domain, Data Quality remains a common issue in the Analytical Journey. He articulated and explained with examples on how incorrect data convention or incorrect interpretation can lead to significant errors and risk factors. He emphasized and stressed on the importance of reading and understanding the market data correctly.

Biological information for Medical Diagnostics: Omics to OmiX by Dr. Abhinanda Sarkar, Director, Omix

Abhinanda

Dr Abhinanda Sarkar explained how Genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and other ‘….omics’ technologies have made biology an information science. He articulated on why the usage of such information for the diagnosis of disease is a rapidly growing and expanding global effort spanning across several disciplines. The session was very informative touching all major disciplines of medical science and technology including Biology, Chemistry, Medicine and revolved around the information stored in DNA.  He also outlined a platform technology that OmiX Labs is developing in the quest to create affordable and low cost diagnostics and health care options powered by “Protein sequencing based diagnostics” solutions.

The session was an insightful eye opener for the audience that is little too familiar with the IOT (Internet of Things) to think in terms of we all being IOCs (Internet of Cells!). Dr. Sarkar’s one slider captured the simplicity of the approach and the complexity of the underlying multidisciplinary knowledge-compound and technologies starting with a “drop of blood” translated into “mini-EMRs” with a series of biological and informational enrichments, amplifications and analytics.

Lunch time Deliberations:

The Speakers, IISc faculty and some of the invited guests huddled over the nationally important topic of what it takes to create adequate quality and quality of analytical talent pool in the country. In the era when data literacy is essential to the competitive edge of the industry and the nation, the speakers touched upon many of the fundamental yet foundational pre-requisites in walking the journey of analytical talent pool. Some of the observations included the following:

  • Ability to translate the business priorities into data priorities is an essential skill that is lacking in the industry.
  • The ability to articulate and communicate the Analytical outputs to the stakeholders is a limiting factor that needs to be overcome.
  • The academic curriculum and degree seriously lack practical internships, leading to bookish knowledge ad lack of practical skills that can be applied in the industry.
  • The focused Analytics specializations such as the ones being offered in the Department of Management Studies in IISc, with the Business + Data + Technology skills are the ones that need to be adopted across the industry and academia.
  • The short but passionate discussions concluded with an action item from the speakers to connect and continue the efforts and drive offline, to address this critical ad important focus area.

NASSCOM supported Panel discussion on ‘Big Data; What it is and Is not”

Panel-2016

From left to right:

George Mathew, VP, Fractal Analytics ,

Robin Jose, Director – Data Science and Innovation, EMC Software and Services India Pvt Ltd

Sanjeev Kumar, Director, Dell Sales, Product & Pricing Analytics.

We are in an era when everybody and their grandparents know everything about the Big Data, and its, yes, its magical powers that can do anything and everything. Well, almost. The IEG core team sensed the need for practical understanding and insights around the use and abuse of Big Data, bringing out the true requirement, intent, usage with expected outcome and purpose of Big Data with practical insights from the industry veterans. This Panel discussion was coordinated by the NASSCOM Analytics Industry Group, with senior industry leaders participating in the Panel Discussion.

Collating the experience from across the Sales, Service and Product Industry, the panelists brought a huge amount of clarity around the topic of Big Data. Some of the key insights included the following:

  • At some point, Big Data problem has to translate into Analytical problem statement. Big Data is the means to the end called Business Analytics
  • The big data output needs to plug into the modeling approaches and tools
  • Think Differen(ce)t: What different techniques does Big Data need, compared to the traditional approaches and techniques? What additional data do you want to bring in, with Big Data possibilities? For example, can social sentiment be fed into the demand forecasting module as a data input?
  • See Big data as a means to create deeper business insights and better experience for customers
  • Business change management is more important while deploying Business Analytics than the technology change management

Thank You Sanjeev, Robin and George; one of the rare post lunch Panel discussions where it was impossible to spot any winking eyes and a stream of real time questions many of which needed to be addressed at the ensuing break, considering the number of questions and limited time.

Account level profitability in the banking analytics trajectory, in Indian and US geographies by Swetha Kasthurirangan, Analytics Manager, WellsFargo

swetha

Swetha shared insights into Gaining Competitive Advantage through Account Level Profitability (ALP). She explained that ALP has been very important to most of the customer servicing industries.

Starting with the 80-20 analysis or the Whale Curve of profitability, Shwetha outlined the data input components that feed into ALP calculation, as well as some of the best practices to progress the ALP journey.

The challenges faced are not just data issues or forecasting constraints, but many other nebulous issues such as ambiguity in costs and revenue, cost surrogates, allocation preferences and the like. Shwetha held the audience captive in this last session of the Summit with distinct caricature visuals, as if to drive home the point that a bit of out of box thinking helps make a good amount of progress with Analytics.

Bridging Social and Digital Divide? by informationexcellence

There is inequality in the world is a known fact. Richest 1% of the world own more than what the rest of the 99% of the world own, gives a gravity of this divide.

inequality

The Internet and Digitization have been touted as a great social equalizers. They have been, and they have not been.

Internet was a great equalizer in the early and initial years, before wads of money started flowing into the industry in the form of the angel / venture capital money. Slowly but surely, the power of money started influencing the direction of the evolution and influence from the industry.

Entire last two centuries of social progress has been towards fighting and eliminating this “Control Mechanism of few powerful people on the entire society”. The “Land for the Ryots (farmer)” in India post independence is one such famous act, that put the lands in the hands of the farm labourers, from the Zamindars.

Unfortunate that the “supposed to be social equalizer”, “Internet”, with its inflated investments and valuations is heading towards the “Zamindar-ization” of the digital businesses. More concerning is the fact that the elite thinkers of the world are yet to realize (or to acknowledge and act, which is perhaps the reality) this fact.

The divide is probably justifiable and OK, if the bottom of the society is also progressing. Which seems to be the case (or is it? let us assume for now). Most everybody now has a TV and CellPhone, that they did not have say ten to twenty years ago. World has become affordable.

Or so it seems, until we take a deeper look. Here is a wonderful blog article from Francis Smart (Thank You Francis), on the true impact on the bottom 25% of the world (by income). What the analysis shows, should be a cause for concern. Please read the full article at the link below:

http://www.econometricsbysimulation.com/2015/11/the-unreported-war-on-americas-poor.html

Summarizing in a nutshell, “Effect of decreased income coupled with increased costs has created a situation in which a higher proportion of the lower 25% are at risk of being classified in poverty as at any time since the 1980s” and “their income in terms of purchasing power is falling”.

“…. The poorest 25% of society now how less purchasing power than they did in the 1980s while the cost of rent, education, and health care have all risen. Despite having the odds stacked against them, the poorest 25% are better educated than at any time in history.  Yet, their incomes have continued to falter while their divorce rates have grown steadily higher”.

A situation that is a perfect contradiction. A rich society, Billions of dollars of investments for seemingly trivial ideas, valuations that are beyond ridiculous, growing Dow, NASDAQ, Nifty, Sensex indexes. Coupled with the 25% of the population that is supposed to be feeling they are in good times – but actually facing lower purchasing power and increasing living costs, inspite of the higher levels of education and degrees.

This is a dangerous cocktail of a situation for the world to be in. It does not take much for an educated and learned youth to be vulnerable when “observing richness everywhere around while feeling desperate at not being able find a decent job and growth opportunities”.

Is ISIS by any chance a by-product of the society we are investing in, a society with increased social and economic and information divide?

Many from the InformationExcellenceGroup community ask, “What beyond conducting some Knowledge Share sessions and Summit Conferences? Can we do something more”?

If we like to live in a peaceful world, social equity is an essential ingredient. Can “Information Excellence Group play a role in there?

We can start with the kind of work Francis Smart has done, that brings out the “Information” from the Data Mass, and helps us validate or correct the perceptions from the reality?

Information Equalization

If you are passionate about the topic, if you finished reading Frank’s blog, if it made you sit straight and wonder why this is happening, if you remained restless and started wondering why this should be true if this is true, then I would like to invite you to give your committed time to make a difference in this context, within the realm of the Information Excellence Group scope and focus. In that case, send your thoughts and notes to us through this blog site. And reach us at informationexcellencegroup at gmail dot com with “two things you can do and like to do” in this context.

And hey, keep this in the mind as you go out for the Black Friday Sales and start seeking out the deals. And if the deal you got is contributing to the negative purchasing power of somebody somewhere in the world!

Happy Thanks Giving and holidays.

Remembering the People’s President by informationexcellence

President Kalam Reflecting About IndiaAPJ Abdul Kalam is a name that naturally resonates with smile, pride, respect, inspiration and lot more. He is one of the few names and personalities, the very thought of him awakens the energy and positivity in everybody.

It is getting to be a month of remembering President Kalam, since the nation lost him. Balancing the thoughts between the emotion of loss to the exuberance of the difference the “People’s President” made.

Everyone in India, and beyond, felt his loss. Or, should we say, were touched by his life, to be more apt! He was an inspiration for every category of society and people, especially everybody who is a student in outlook. Indeed his death is a big loss to our nation.

President Kalam_Dreams Transcend

When asked, “Where do you want to be, if you are to be reborn?”, his response was, “I want to take birth in ‘Developed and Livable India’ ”. True to his words, he dedicated his whole life working towards that dream and goal. He did make a good deal of difference progressing many milestones in that direction.

Kalam GoodByeEven in that final journey, he remembered to practice what he preached, following his word, “Good Byes should be short and sweet”. And retained the coveted distinction of continuing to be a teacher in his last act.

He will be remembered for a long time by everyone in India. Considering his life has been a spectrum of vibrant colours, each of us will have our own thoughts and distinct take away from Dr Kalam the Teacher.

So, what did we, the citizens of India, think of and about him, on the sudden and sad loss of the legend. We thought we will put some of the simple and foundational data science to infer and understand the birds’ eye view of people’s sentiments and memories of people’s President.

We explored the social media and collected the tributes and comments across the twitteratti in the two weeks following his short good bye.

Remembering President Kalam_FirstThoughts.jpg

Here is what we came across as the key thoughts and reflections from the sentiments expressed. They included the combination of the tributes, respectful appreciations and acknowledgements, and thoughtful suggestions.

The expressions made a radiating picture, in the form of Mournings, Memories and Inspirations.

President Kalam's Memories

Yes, President Kalam would have liked the Mournings to quickly evaporate and make room for Memories; and the Memories to rapidly translate into Inspiration for each Individual to do one thing of relevance and significance to self and society, better, deeper, faster and vaster.

Radiating Thoughts on President Kalam

“My message, especially to young people is to have courage to think differently, courage to invent, to travel the unexplored path, courage to discover the impossible and to conquer the problems and succeed. These are great qualities that they must work towards. This is my message to the young people,” the President had said.

Real tribute to him is youngsters working towards his dream of Developed and Livable India. And his definition of ‘youngster’ meant “Young at Heart and Mind”. So please don’t find an excuse in not being young enough to take and act on his suggestion.

A true tribute to Dr. Kalam would be, for me (reader, each one of us), is  to have a DREAM that is worth having, positive for the self and society, that does not let you sleep.

President Kalam Calling YouDo share your dreams that is not letting you sleep, and how others in the ecosystem can help you achieve that goal better.

For, the part of success lies in making that dream contagious and infectious enough that it is no longer just your dream.

To say “Rest In Piece” to Dr. Kalam would be an insult. Dr. Kalam was always in peace. He may have been impatient and in a hurry, but he always was in peace. We can make his soul prouder by having thousands of inspirations start radiating the positive change, with sleepless dreams that lead to peaceful and purposeful outcomes.

Third NASSCOM Big Data Conference in Hyderabad by informationexcellence

For those who may have missed out the communication on NASSCOM Big Data Conference later this month in Hyderabad: Good Conference to attend:

NASSCOM Communication on the Conference:

Welcome to the 3rd edition of NASSCOM Big Data & Analytics Summit.

We all understand that Enterprises are challenged by the ‘Uberization of Business’. Analytics need not be sold to the CXO. The CXOs realize the value of data, be it structured or unstructured. What they struggle with is to understand the connected consumer and her expectations, the nuances of handling customer churn, managing enterprise risk and creating strategies for the new world order. In short the CXOs are seeking ‘Insights and Simplicity to Decision Making’.

We believe Analytics can make decision making simpler, efficient, and effective to the Enterprise.

The question is – who? The men or the machines. Will Analytics itself get disrupted? Machines are becoming smarter with ‘Embedded Cognitive Analytics’, devices are getting connected leading to ‘Internet of Analytics’ and the need for ‘real time’ Analytics is leading to automated Decision making?

Dear all,

At the outset, warm wishes!

The students of Game Theory lab (Department of Computer Science and Automation, Indian Institute of Science), have developed a Facebook app as part of an ongoing academic project for collecting a particular kind of data. The app asks your preferences for 8 simple topics and tells you how perfectly you represent your friends and society.

We hereby request you to play the app at https://apps.facebook.com/prefaggregation/ and spread it among your contacts.

As Facebook has declared to change its policies from May onwards, we would greatly appreciate if you could spread the word before April 30, 2015.

Many thanks,

Good Article: Industrial IOT- 6 Irreversible Transitions by informationexcellence

There is plenty of buzz about the Big Data and the Connected world and the IoTs.

From the time GE Presented about the “Internet of Things” in the Information Excellence Conference at SAP Labs in 2012 October (http://www.slideshare.net/informationexcellence/infovision-ramsu-sundararajan-and-srihari-narasimhan-ge-analytics-on-the-industrial-internet); there is a great deal of progress and many applications that have been put to real life use with the connected data applications.

It is still early years though, and clarity is evolving yet. Here is a good article from Derick Jose with pointers to the IOT evolution – “Industrial IOT- 6 Irreversible Transitions”. Read on this linkedin article at

https://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20140905110428-3175536-industrial-iot-6-irreversible-transitions

Two questions after you read the article:

1) What would you like to accomplish if the Genie were to grant your wish to have everything connected with intelligence?

2) If (you will) and when (that is the key!) you succeed, what would you do with the surplus of time you would have on hand (of your collective team time)?
